Day 6 - Centurion's Servant

“When He entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, ‘Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony!‘ ‘I will come and heal him," He told him.’  The centurion replied, ‘Sir, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed, For I too am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command. I say to this one, “Go” and he goes; and to another, “Come!” and he comes; and to my slave, “Do this!” and he does it.’ Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following Him, ‘I assure you: I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith! I tell you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ Then Jesus told the centurion, "Go. As you have believed, let it be done for you.’ And his servant was cured that very moment.”
-Matthew 8:5-13 HCSB

Jesus was amazed at the centurion’s faith. Jesus was also amazed at the lack of belief by people in his hometown in Mark 6. There are only two times in the Bible when Jesus was amazed! Some versions use the word marveled instead of amazed, but the same thing holds true.

This centurion had faith! I think I have faith. The Bible says with faith the size of a mustard seed a mountain can be moved. D A mustard seed is about the same size as a regular sewing pin head. I’d like to think I have at least that much faith, but I haven’t moved any mountains lately.

Verse seven in some Bible versions Jesus asks if he should come to heal the servant rather than stating that he will come. I think this is also interesting. Is it a rhetorical question. Ahah, remember, our Lord and Savior knows our hearts and minds. Perhaps the question/statement was made for the benefit of those around as Jesus knew what the man felt and thought. God uses everything and I am thankful that is so.

Another part of this story that I have loved since I was a small girl is verse 13 where the “servant was healed at that very moment”. Today, and probably at the time of Jesus also, some people would say that was just a coincidence. Yeah, right, I think not. God cares about details, he cares about us, and God is in the details! Rejoice today that God cares for you no matter how small the detail.
